Blue Water Regatta at Crystal Lake

The newly forming Melges 17 fleet went on the road this past weekend for the Blue Water Regatta on Crystal Lake near Traverse City.  Five of our six boat fleet went to the event.  While Chris Katzfey did not bring his boat, he crewed for Tim Conder.

The venue is absolutely awesome.  I never saw water with those colors outside of the Caribbean.  Saturday was a very windy day with winds from 15 to 25 knots.  Everyone was working up wind and for the most part flying downwind with spinnakers full.  Many people tipped over, and several people tipped over multiple times and kept coming back for more.  I am confident that the five races Saturday were plenty for all participants.

Sunday was another beautiful day, but winds at a very manageable 10 knots or so.  The competition was impressive.  Our fleet’s top finisher was Tom Lauer in 14th place, followed by Tim Conder, Bob Herdrich, and Bryan Sarber in 15,16 and 18 respectively.  John Schumacher who only sailed Sunday finished 20th.  We all learned a lot from the experience.

The fleet will be back in town for the next couple of weekends before setting off for the I.L.Y.A. Melges 17 Championship in Pewaukee, WI on 7/9 through the 11th.
